Eating Safely MultivitaminsConsuming a multivitamin supplement has been recommended for years to promote health. Especially for those who rarely ate vegetables and fruit. However, some studies say, the consumption of multivitamins too often could hasten death.

ConsumerLab.com, which became the pharmaceutical industry watchdog, found that 11 of the 21 products tested multivitamin that contains very little vitamin and it has a harmful chemical substances such as lead.

Multivitamins during Pregnancy

birth weightIf every pregnant woman in the world take vitamin and mineral supplements, have 1.5 million fewer babies with low birth weight per year, said a review of the literature.

Women should start taking vitamins and mineral supplements “as soon as they learn they are pregnant,” said Dr. Prakesh S. Shah, from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

Prenatal Vitamins Reduce Child Cancer Risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Women who take multivitamins before and during pregnancy reduced the chance of the baby developing certain types of tumors in childhood, researchers say.

The team led by G. Koren, of the University of Toronto, conducted a review of a large number of studies and found that taking a multivitamin before and during early pregnancy reduced by 36 percent the risk of childhood leukemia.

The prenatal vitamin supplement consumption was also associated with a 47 percent lower risk of developing neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor that grows in the nerve tissue, and a 27 percent lower risk of childhood brain tumors
